Narong Daun has been a resident artist with ARTrageously Ramsay Ong – The Art Gallery in Kuching, Sarawak since June 2000. Narong is of Bidayuh ancestry and brings to her art a vibrant sensitivity to Sarawak’s indigenous cultures, its flora and its fauna. She has chosen silk painting as her preferred medium and her work varies from stylized representations of Sarawak’s nature, to conceptually inspired renderings of various cultural motifs found throughout Sarawak. Silk painting is a painstaking process whereby fabric dyes are carefully worked into silk or cotton, producing wonderfully ‘layered’ mosaics of colours and patterns. Narong has emerged as a strong artist in this genre since she began working with this medium ten years ago. The presentation of her subject matter is often bold and striking, making it superbly suited to this style of art. Narong’s Bidayuh heritage has had a profound impact on her work. She draws inspiration chiefly from the boundless variety of Sarawak’s flora and fauna, and incorporates indigenous cultural motifs into her conceptual painting. Stylized depictions of Sarawak’s plants and flowers figure prominently in Narong’s work. Her “Rahsia Rimba Series” (Heliconia Family and Jungle Trap), and “Plocoglottis Javanica” (Orchid), are a small number that showcase Narong’s versatility in portraying these beautiful plants. More stylized yet are Narong’s Hornbill Batiks. Three or more birds are woven together into a medley of colour and harmony. Sometimes the hornbills are juxtaposed with cultural motifs like Kayan hats or ‘tandok’ swirls. Narong often utilizes various traditional design themes and orchestrates them into semi abstract works as in her Sarawakiana series (“Terendak” and “Pesta Kenyalang”). Today, Narong continues to be inspired by Sarawak’s cultural diversity and the natural beauty of the rainforest. She captures this subject matter with a keen eye and steady hand, resulting in artwork that demonstrates excellent control and vitality. Her efforts mark an important and sought after contribution to art in Sarawak, Malaysia.
